WELCOME BACK!

I would just like to say that the UNO Vanguard blog is now back up and running at full capacity. This site's author was busy graduating and finding full-time employment here in Omaha, which is a headache in and of itself.

In retrospect, this site grew out of the fact that certain leadership at UNO were denigrating all others associated with our growing campus, hindering what it in fact has the potential to be. Since the sacking of our Supreme Chancellor and Vader-esque Buck, the new essence of the mission at "Voice" is to bring a new found light upon our unique, burgeoning academic situation via seriousness and humor. Standing on our campus you see the signs of construction at every viewpoint. This is synonymous with our growth and the overall idea of becoming the best college choice in Omaha, as well as in the entire state of Nebraska.

I say welcome to old and new readers alike. As always, feel free to comment on posts and provide feedback or criticism.

GO MAVS!

Her Own Walking Appointment

It is now 11:30 a.m., and Chancellor Nancy Belck has handed over her resignation. The woman who oversaw the vast improvements to this urban university with the building of South campus, on-campus dormitories, and re-designing the library has officially decided that she can no longer effectively run her position.

For the entire summer we have seen distraction after distraction take place that have ultimately superceded anything she has done during her tenure. Initially placing the blame on the "rogue spender" Jim Buck, one could easily see it was a matter of time before this event took place. Could her presence have been a hinderance to the progress of UNO? We can't really know, as previously stated the additions to the campus can only be viewed in a positive light. But bringing in cronies from your last administrative position who are ineffective and dangerous to university do make you yourself an ineffective and dangerous person to the life of our university.

Anything that detracts from making our campus the best and brightest there is should be trimmed off like fat from a steak. Our quest is perfection, and our community should recognize that anything other than this is a nuisance. I would advocate that the new Chancellor be one that understands the potential at UNO to be a legitimate rival campus to Lincoln. I would also ask that this person seriously investigate other lower persons in the administration to see if they qualify as meeting this ideal of a positive standard of growth.

Supreme Chancellor Belck's presence has stifled discussion about her and other since fired administrators in class now since the beginning of the semester. UNO will go on, and problems caused by her ultimately need to be fixed, but hopefully this marks a turning point for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The appointinment of a forward-looking Chancellor with no fear of Lincoln or Regents should be the hope of the students and faculty of this university.

Kudos to Us!

Congratulations to the University of Nebraska-Omaha for flexing its newly discovered academic muscle in being named to separate Best Colleges Lists. First, the Business program strikes again as they have been placed on the U.S. News & World Reports list of America's Best Colleges. For those of you that do not know, the magazine issues a yearly investigation concerning the best places of higher learning. From undergraduate institutions public and private to graduate programs ranging from med school to engineering school, all are listed in a somewhat subjective manner concerning a multitude of measurables. That said, it is a favorable list to appear on for reputation. The business persons have repeatedly landed on the list, making the MBA program one that draws students from other institutions intra-state, as well as from institutions from around the country.

UNO also appears in the Best Midwestern Colleges issued yearly by the Princeton Review company. As taken from the UNO website, "The Princeton Review launched its regional college guides several years ago in response to a growing trend for students to attend colleges and universities within two- to five-hour drives of their homes".

A total of 6 colleges and universities made the cut. Along with UNO we have the usual suspects of Creighton and UNL. The other three would be the Praire Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan, Doane, and Hastings. Of the 6, it is easily seen that the ratio regarding value of education to cost is highest served by attending UNO. All of these schools, besides Lincoln as they would be in the University system, cost a pretty penny to attend. Usually, graduates still have to move to Omaha and re-establish roots 4-5 years dormant if they continued to live through the summer at their college of choice.

Again, we have a good thing going here as the Princeton website shows that we are a university of "ascension". Keep working hard and know that your presence is helping better OUR institution of choice.

2006 Must-Do List for UNO Students

For those at UNO who are freshman, transfers, 7th year seniors, and even non-traditional students there is alot going on here at our metro campus. This first day was probably pretty unsettling for everybody as we had just become acclimated to that summer homestasis that has us away from homework and other various due dates. As such, I have compiled a "must-do" list for the following year. This is very wide ranging and frankly anything that has come into my head will be placed on the site. So here we go, current students and alumni, a must-do list for this year.

1.) Stop wearing Creighton shirts on our campus!- Look, we know your boyfriend or girlfriend goes there, maybe even mom or dad went there, BUT YOU DON'T. I am fully aware that you think by wearing that that certain Creighton shirt on campus that either guys will think you are the ultimate catch and girls will just swoon behind you wherever you walk, but it is a matter of fact that will not happen. An investment needs to be made, and in no way does this need to be monetary. An emotional connection to UNO allows people to do various positive things to better our institution. But please, keep the Creighton (on the fence about Lincoln) shirts at home.

2.) Be Proactive- This means that you should become involved in some sort of campus activity. Although you hear this alot, UNO began as a commuter campus. This means the student population was based on those coming and going, sans dormitories. With the advent of on-campus housing, it should facillitate those into action as it allows for closer contact with the physical school and all it has to offer. Join a club, sorority, or even host a get together of classmates. This allows other like-minded people to come into contact with each other and tighten the social atomosphere of this school, long hindered by the lack of housing.

3.) Bitch about Parking- everyone else does it, why not you?

4.) Major in something that you LOVE doing- Nothing is worse than going to college for 5 years and have to go back because of a mid-life crisis career change. I personally know it is difficult to make life-affirming decisions in this short of a timeframe. I also am aware of the impact of the decision that non-traditional students face when quitting a profession and coming back to college. This is why I am telling you to pick what you love doing. Don't worry about how much something pays; if you like waking up in the morning and going to work, that is all that counts.

5.) Skip a Class- Just do it for all of your high school teachers that told you, "The reason that I am so tough on you is that when you get to college, professors will not care if you attend or not". that would be a false on that one, as every class I have EVER attended was taught by instructors that cared about you (as to what level is up for debate). Just don't make a habit of it.

6.) Go to an Athletic contest- Show your support by ditching your Creighton shirt and replace it with a UNO shirt from the bookstore. Then, go check our your Mavericks on the field. You'd better make sure to do this as soon as possible, as things are headed are all jumbled from Administrative actions the previous two years.

7.) Check out the new library- This thing is top notch. Please make your way past the newly updated entryway and into the rear of the building. Cafe seating fills up the space, with ample room to study or just converse. Speaking of cafe seating, THERE IS AN ACTUAL CAFE IN THERE NOW! Go have a cup of coffee and watch the cars on Dodge street speed by, that will be you in half a decade.

8.) Take a class you do not need- Ever taken a judo class for credit before? Well you can now because it is offered in the HPER building. Remember those elective credits that need to be filled? Oh you're welcome.

9.) Juggle school, jobs, and social life- You might have had a job in high school. You might have had a girlfriend/boyfriend in high school. You might have thought you had alot on your plate, but everything gets turned up a couple of notches here. It is but an adolescent right of passage that you undergo all of these stressors and cope with them as well. Just remember, everyone does it.

10.) Have fun! You'll never get this time back. In retrospect, college is a great period in the life of those of us who decide to go. You pay alot, but you should also get much more out of it. Work hard, play harder.

"What he believes is best for the university..."

Vice-Supreme Chancellor Jim Buck resigned yesterday, amid rumors of his misappropriations of UNO money during his tenure. Supreme Chancellor Belck calls it a shock, and blames media scrutiny from the Omaha World-Herald and other outlets leading up to his action. "Jim ... Does what he believes is best for the university". Huh....

Jim Buck, seen here as portrayed by Ken Lay during the wildly successful, Tony-winning play "How I Got Poop to Roll Uphill", was called a "good sport" by Belck for apparently putting up with the media asking him to be accountable for the state of the UNO athletic department. Although I personally feel this is a team-flub on part of the short-sided, UNL appeasing administration, why exactly was Buck so resistant to question his accountability?

Long story short, Supreme Chancellor Belck let everyone know that Buck's perks are very common in the administration biz. His perks included, but sadly aren't limited to:

* Country Club dues
* 2005 Cadillac lease payments
* OTHER Country Club charges "beyond dues"
* Omaha Press Club dues
* Insurance on said Caddy
* Maintenance on said Caddy
* Satellite radio subscription
* Travel not directly related to athletics (OWH, 8/15/06)

Oh ok, well if Chancellor Belck says that all of this is common for vice-chancellors, then it must be hunky-dorey. Well lets take the current "word-of-the-day" of Super Regent Randy Ferlic when he calls the previously mentioned perks, "EXCEPTIONAL". Judging by the general disposition of Regents when they address UNO, I would assume that this word definitely had a negative connotation to it.

The most gross example of incompetence on the part of EX-CHANCELLOR Buck would be his actions at a charity golf fundraiser for UNO athletics. Paying the $500 entry fee for his daughter and her husband, Buck later used his authority to recoup the money he had paid to participate. Mind you, Buck's official duties related to general oversight of university non-academic affairs. If you are filling out the scorecard at home, this means that Buck very well participated in event at which he managed, meaning to attribute to the betterment of our athletic program. So, not only did he take all of the aforementioned things listed above, he also took home a $197,500 salary. OH, and he took home the $500 he originally paid for a round of golf with his daughter and son-in-law. Sources say he was later reimbursed for his loss...

What is absolutely unreal is that Supreme Chancellor Belck is supporting Buck, even after all of this negligent use of athletic funds has come to light. She almost takes the tone of one half of a failed celebrity couple, blaming the media attention for all of their problems. She went so far as to deny the OWH access to Buck's full financial records from his administration. After the World-Herald threatened legal action to explore other potential improprieties, we see that Jeffrey Skilling, er, Jim Buck resigned.

What he have here is the beginning of the end for certain persons in our university, especially within the administration. Oddly enough, a physics oddity foreshadowed in this article perfectly describes situations just like these in real life! When he see the heads of corporations, presidencies, etc., on their way to falling, we first see their cronies initially take the heat for them. Then, with no one to deflect overwhelming attention from personal actions, we see them go down as well. As for the physics oddity we call the experiment, "Shit Rolling Uphill".

Quick Hitters

* Can we assume that the meeting last week in Grand Island at which Chancellor Belck presented her side of the story concerning financial lapses in the athletic department went well? The general public has heard nothing more from the then rampant, almost daily reports of our university gone awry. it has been so quiet that it has been more than a week since there has been a peep online from the "Voice" office, and can you blame us?

* Is there something with the Nebraska Regents appointing ex-Senator David Karnes auditor of UNO's athletic department? The same David Karnes who is UNL alumni of '71, who also attended law school in stinkin' Lincoln. I don't mean to lob conspiracy theories out, looking for something to stick, but is he the absolute best sought out for the benefit of UNO? Why not just let David Sokol give the audit a shot? That would at least be interesting...

* Why has Supreme Chancellor Belck not been placed into our Hall of Shame yet?

* Why has Vice Supreme Chancellor Jim Buck not been placed into our Hall of Shame yet??? We (students) are paying for his new Caddy and country club membership for crying out loud! That screams evil.

* Just letting everyone know, Governor Heineman appointed the new Nebraska Regent taking the place of the impeached/convicted David Herbster. Here is the rundown: his name is not important. He's old. He's from Western Nebraska. He's a conservative maintaining that his only concern is his disdain for stem cell research. He graduated from UNL. Everything else is just details. Sounds great for the UNOmaha campus.

* I overreacted... his name is Robert Phares. He still doesn't matter.

Revelations

It is very comforting to know that I am not the only person to feel this same way, but Tom Shatel wrote another pro-UNO article on sunday. Same old, same old: Belck comes out looking bad, the Regents come out against the city of Omaha, and the students come out cheated. He opens saying that UNO needs a "vision", in which he is correct, but in more ways than one. Our university needs a well-rounded, collective vision that capitalizes upon our superior location and student population.

Being frank, the city of Lincoln has Husker athletics going for it and that is about it! A wise business major at Lincoln knows that they would most certainly have to relocate to be successful with their degree that they worked 4 years on. With this in mind, why does the city of Omaha allow itself to be subjugated to second-place? Good question.

Within the article, Shatel reiterates the schism between those with varied interests of UNO. First, there seems to be those aforementioned
that continue to believe that our university will remain second-fiddle to Lincoln. Many of the Nebraska Regents, Supreme Chancellor Belck, and others in the administration serve the purpose of keeping Lincoln's lap warm. The diorama to the right is as such: the deliciously cute Yorkie named "Jellybeans" is playing the part Belck & Co., while my Grandmother's favorite chair is playing the part of UNL. Get it? Doesn't it just look comfy?!?!?! Second, there seems to be the more intelligent persons in our presence that have a forward thinking view that could drive UNO to the top, fulfilling it's potential of being the top campus in Nebraska.

What can we learn from this? Shatel does something very wise in his article, not calling for the out-and-out resignation of Belck. He mainly calls for the streaming of interests for UNO. In asking for success, the forward thinking persons in our administration must be identified and given the tools to actually succeed. He's correct, but he should have gone further. Our administration should reach out to all UNO graduates that Shatel refers to as the, "generation of UNO grads have grown up into the corporate, business world of Omaha". Not only them, but is it too much to ask that all alumni should be involved in their university? A cynic would say "yes", as they are too busy driving to Lincoln on Saturday for Husker games...
